Fun Furnace Facts

Some exciting basic furnace mechanical code facts you might not know:

  • An upright furnace can be installed in the attic space more than 5′ in height.
  • Upright Furnace

    Carrier Upright Furnace

The passageway to an attic that has a furnace can not be less then 30 inches by 30 inches and has to be as large as the biggest part of the furnace.

  • Warm-air furnaces can’t be installed in hazardous areas.
  • Warm-air furnaces can’t be installed in surgical operating rooms.
  • Warm-air furnaces can’t be installed in the bathroom with one access.
  • If you are going to install a flat floor furnace, make sure you give a minimum of 6 inches clearance from the wall.
  • A wall register type floor furnace needs to be at least 6 inches from any inside wall corner.
  • A vented wall furnace should be installed at least eighteen inches ¬†below any type of structural projection.
  • Any vented wall furnace should be located so that the door doesn’t swing within less than twelve inches of air inlets
  • Gravity type warm air furnaces should be equipped with an air outlet temperature limit control that can’t be set for temperatures greater than 250 degrees F.

What is a furnaces efficiency standard?

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) РHow efficiency of a furnace can be determined by

In the United States the minimum efficiency that can be manufactured is no less then 80% AFUE. ¬†What “80% AFUE” means is that for every $1 spent to heat your house, 80 cents is whats actually spent to generate the warmth. ¬†The most efficient gas furnace would be 95+%

Efficient Gas Furnace Benefits:

Other then saving you more money, an efficient gas furnace can improve your air quality.  Efficient Gas furnaces most of the time have variable speed blowers, that can switch between more then one speed.  These types of furnaces can run longer at a lower speed, thus resulting in the air being filtered more frequently.

Air Conditioning Tips to help save you money!

Air Conditioning Tips

Did you know

During the summer the average American will spend around 40% of their electricity bill for air conditioning their home.  There are easy ways to lower the cost of running the ac.  Use these basic tips to keep your home cool and efficiently keep the temperature lower in your home during the hot summer!

1. If you only need one room cooled in your home, do not use the central ac.  Instead, look into buying a small portable air conditioner.  Newer portable air conditioning systems actually have a high energy efficient ratings.  The Air Conditioning portables can cool the room your in quickly, and save you money.

2. Install solar shades, white window shades, or mini-blinds.  These types of blinds are very affective.  They can decrease the heat gains from the sun by up to %50-%80.

3. Try to keep all the windows and doors closed during the day.  When it cools down you can open the windows, and turn a fan on for ventilation.

4. If your home has a split-system air conditioner try to keep the outside HVAC unit shaded.  However, do not keep any plants near the system or anything that might obstruct the air flow.

5.  Replace or Clean your air conditioning filter every 1-3 months, depending on how often you use the system.  A dirty filter will reduce air flow.

6. When you purchase an air conditioning system, make sure you get the right air conditioner size for the room.  If the ac unit is too small it wont cool your room effectively, and if its too large the AC system will consumer more electricity then necessary.

7.  If you have central heating and air, make sure all ducts are properly sealed.  Ducts that run through an attic, or garage should be insulated.

8. Check the SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio).  Air conditioners with a SEER of 13 can save %50 more energy then older systems that have ratios of around 6.

SEER CHART

9. Dryers, dishwashers, and cooking produce a lot of heat.  Try to wait until it gets cooler to do these activities.

10. Set the thermostat to the highest temperature that is still comfortable.  The lower the difference between outdoor and indoor temps = the lower your electricity bill will be.

Basics of Capacitors

Basics of capacitors

A Capacitor is basically like a battery.  The thing that a capacitor shares in common with a battery, is that they both hold electrical energy.  A capacitor will hold electrons inside of it for any given time.  Inside of it, there are terminals which connect to 2 metal plates.  The 2 metal plates are parted with a non-conducting dielectric substance. You might be wondering, what is dielectric?  Dielectric can pretty much be any type of non-conductive material, or some type insulator.  Dielectric is a material that an electric field can be held without any real loss of power.

Process of dielectric

Process of dielectric – Basics of Capacitors

Some basic non-conductive materials that can be commonly found in a capacitor is ceramic, Teflon, cellulose, and porcelain.  The dielectric is what dictates the kind of capacitor you have and what its used for.  It depends on the type of dielectric being used and the size for the use of high frequency or high voltage apps.

Capacitors can be made for all types of products, from something as small as a calculator, to a super capacitor that has the power for a commuter bus.  Capacitors are found in all types of HVAC systems, including the circuit boards, and defrost boards.  The most basic capacitors found in HVAC systems are run capacitors, start capacitors, and dual run capacitors.

Run Capacitors

Run capacitors are primarily polypropylene, and are created to continuously run.  They are designed to run the whole time the motor runs.  Run Capacitors are measured by microfarads (mfd) from a range of 1.5 to 100.  An electric motor that is single phase needs a capacitor to charge its second phase winding.  If a person installs the wrong run capacitor, the motors magnetic field will be uneven.  The uneven spots will make the rotor hesitate.  This can make the motor noisy, take more energy, cause the performance to decrease, and/or cause it to overheat.

Image of basic run capacitor and a start capacitor

Basic Capcitors found in HVAC systems

Start Capacitors

Start Capacitors momentarily raise motor starting torque.  They allow the motor to off and on quickly.  Start Capacitors ratings are above 70mfd.  They have 4 voltage types: 330v, 250v, 165v, and 125v.  The start capacitor will stay in effect until the motor reaches 3/4 of its full power.  The motor will run more efficiently, because of a start capacitor.
